Below you will find our safety video along with helpful information to keep in mind as you begin planning for Day of Hope. From sales to safety, we want everyone to be informed and safe!
Helpful Tips
Keep your cell phone with you at all times since you will be getting check-in calls.
Bring a pair of scissors to be able to open newspaper bundles.
Bring and wear sunscreen and hats/visors.
Wear comfortable shoes.
Remind your team members to bring plenty of water.
To help keep money organized, bring rubber bands for bills and Ziploc bags for change.
It might be helpful to start with seed money (e.g. 20 one-dollar bills) to allow your team to make change, if needed.
Count your money and write the final amount on the outside of the bank bag prior to sealing it closed.
Aprons do not need to be returned unless you have no need for them.
If you need more or have excess newspapers, call the Marian Foundation at 805-739-3595.
Safety Requirements:
Wear your Day of Hope apron over your clothing to easily be seen by drivers.
All sales must be made from the sidewalk. No papers are to be sold from median islands.
Sales are permitted from right-hand curbs and corners.
Do not step off the curb to sell.
Normal flow of traffic must not be interrupted. Do not walk in front of traffic to sell.
Sales may take place only when the traffic is stopped.
Do not reach into cars with money or change in hand, as you run the risk of having someone try to take it.
Do not make change for $100 bills; suggest customers get change from a nearby bank or convenience store.
When the light turns green, it is important for you to remain still. If prospective customers try to get your attention, motion them to “move on.”
Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Be respectful and courteous to all drivers and fellow volunteers.
Follow the instructions of safety monitors and your team leader.
Team Leaders—you are responsible for the conduct of your volunteers.
Volunteers who do not follow safety instructions will be asked to stop selling Day of Hope newspapers.
Sales Instructions:
Newspapers may be sold from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM for $1.00 each.
Between 6:30 AM and 9:00 AM newspapers and aprons may be obtained from either Santa Maria distribution site, Mission Hope Cancer Center, 1325 E. Church Street, or Santa Maria Times, 3200 Skyway Drive.
By 12:30 PM, all money and any unsold newspapers must be returned to Mission Hope Cancer Center, 1325 E. Church Street.
A maximum of 100 newspapers per team may be checked out at any one time unless otherwise specified. Volunteers will be available the day-of to deliver more papers as needed.
Feel free to sell more papers! Just return all money collected from your previous sales to check out additional papers. If volunteers deliver more papers to you, they will collect previous sale proceeds at that time.
Checks should be made payable to the Marian Foundation. An individual’s check serves as a receipt. If asked for a receipt, please provide a pre-signed receipt that can be obtained when you check out your papers.
If a donor tells you to “Keep the change,” thank them on behalf of the patients at Mission Hope Cancer Center and add it to the money you’ve collected. Please note that cash for making change is not provided.
